Autumn is Coming

Posted by on

Ohmigod, ohmigod, ohmigod, GUYS. It's the first day of fall tomorrow! The season of crisp air, crunchy leaves, and hoodies is almost upon us, and I for one couldn't be more excited. Fall has always been my favorite season, not only for the perfect weather, and not just because there's a holiday that I can dress up however I want and people give me candy for the trouble.

Fall signifies a slow down, a reminder that nothing lasts forever, and that there's just much beauty in the decay as there is in the bloom.

After living through two years of perpetual summer in South Florida, I think the best moment (after unpacking that last box in our new Asheville apartment) was stepping out into the new day and taking a nice, deep breath. The cool air rushed into my lungs, slightly stinging, but entirely invigorating. I felt the hairs on my arm prick up, and my scalp start to tingle.

For all the years spent in cool climates, I don't believe I ever truly appreciated it as much as I do now. How many mornings did I go through before this, and never feeling so alive? So awake? I recall my dog pulling to go back in and get her breakfast, but I just stood there, breathing. It was such a welcome respite from the literal and metaphorical heat I had been dealing with.

We moved to Asheville, because we needed to heal. And this town, these mountains, that cool, crisp air, were all the prescriptions we needed. I'm so grateful that we get to experience another autumn here. I can't wait to pounce on every leaf to hear a satisfying crunch, I can't wait to explore new trails and experience old ones in entirely new ways. I can't wait to confuse my dog by standing still and hungrily sniffing the air. Bring it on!
